Whether it is mandatory for a non-resident Indian to have a PAN?

Every Non resident who is required to file a return of income or intends to enter into an economic or financial transaction where quoting of PAN is mandatory must have a PAN.
Some Transactions in which quoting of PAN is mandatory are as follows:
1. Sale or purchase of a motor vehicle or vehicle other than two wheeled vehicles.
2. Opening of a demat account with a depository, participant, custodian of securities or any other person with SEBI
3. Payment of an amount exceeding Rs. 50,000 to a Mutual Fund for purchase of its units
5. Payment of an amount exceeding Rs. 50,000 to a company or an institution for acquiring debentures or bonds issued by it.
6. Deposits of cash exceeding Rs. 50,000 during any one day with a banking company or a co-operative bank.
7. Payment of an amount aggregating to more than Rs. 50,000 in a financial year as life insurance premium to an insurer etc

Who should apply for a duplicate PAN card ?

A.

One should apply for a duplicate PAN card when a Permanent Account Number (PAN) has already been allotted to the applicant but he/she requires a new duplicate PAN Card due to the following reason:
1. Lost the PAN Card
2. Damaged the PAN Card
3. Wants to change from old to new tamper proof PAN card.

Q.

What address proof shall be given by non resident for applying PAN if he doesn’t have any address in India?

A.

NRIs can provide a foreign address as residential or office address if they do not have any Indian address of their own.

How long does it take to get PAN card now?

A.

New PAN card takes approx 15 to 20 working days. Correction or Replacement card takes anything from 30 to 40 working days; however this may vary depending on the authorities discretion.

The PAN card processing authorities to whom the application is submitted will ensure delivery of new PAN card at the address indicated by you in the application Form
